There were many exhibitions at Rencontres Arles this July but Christian Marclay's vision of urban streets took me back to East London. In these videos, projected on either side of a corridor, you see and hear bottles, glasses and cans being kicked down the street by an unseen protagonist. 'Pub Crawl' shows the street close up only focusing on the vessel and the road. The sound is especially clear and unsettling, the bottles hitting the tarmac and rolling around. The morning after the night before.
Additional videos show stills of street detritus - drink cartons with straws, chewing gum cigarette ends, carefully positioned in the edit to give the illusion of time and motion. The straws circle like the hands of a fast moving clock reminding us of his time obsession.
